Piperine Prevent Remodeling of Aorta - Medscape, 12/26/11 -
"N-nitro-L-arginine-methylester (L-NAME) is a
nonspecific inhibitor of all three NO synthase (NOS) isoforms (neuronal -
nNOS; inducible - iNOS; endothelial - eNOS) and causes an increase of blood
pressure in a dose-dependent manner when administered to the experimental
animals ... Administration of piperine or curcumin to animals with
L-NAME-induced hypertension lead to a decrease of blood pressure, curcumin
causing a more significant drop. Similar hypertension reducing effect of
curcumin has been reported recently by Nakmreong et al.[34] Another
study[25] registered a significant decrease of blood pressure after
intravenous piperine administration. Piperine treatment was effective also
in lowering blood pressure in rats with L-NAME-induced experimental
hypertension described by Kumar et al.[36] The combination of curcumin and
piperine in our experiment did not cause a statistically significant blood
pressure decrease (with the exception of the third week) but it is apparent
that it copies the course of the piperine graph curve. These differences in
the results are probably related to different mechanisms of effect by the
spices on blood pressure"

The Doctor's Remedy: Turmeric for Joint Pain - NYTimes.com, 10/19/11 -
"Physician: Dr. Minerva Santos, director of integrative medicine at Northern
Westchester Hospital in New York ... Recommended Remedy: Turmeric for joint pain
... What the Doctor Says: ... She recommends a dose of 1,000 milligrams a day.
The benefit of buying it in a bottle, she said, is that it’s usually combined
with a compound called piperine, which aids absorption"

Resveratrol bioavailability boosted by piperine: Study - Nutra USA, 8/16/11
- "Using mice, Prof Ahmad and his co-workers analyzed the level of exposure and
maximum blood levels of resveratrol achieved by combining 100 milligrams of
resveratrol per kilogram of animal with 10 mg/kg of piperine ... Compared to
resveratrol alone, combination with piperine was found to increase the degree of
exposure to 229 percent, and the maximum levels in the blood by a whopping 1,544
percent" - [Abstract]

Spices may boost breast health: Study - Nutra USA, 12/9/09 -
"curcumin, found in turmeric, and piperine, found in
black peppers, decreased the number of stem cells while having no effect on
normal differentiated cells ... If we can limit the number of stem cells, we
can limit the number of cells with potential to form tumours ... normal,
non-cancerous stem cells were unaffected by the compounds, which appeared to
selectively target the cancer stem cells" - [Abstract]

"While finasteride (Propecia/Proscar) decreases serum DHT,
it also is thought to increase estrogen which suggests that men over 35 may want to consider using it in conjunction with a systemic aromatase inhibitor such as Chrysin/Piperine
(Super Miraforte), Arimidex,
or stinging nettle extract, to maximize its hair growth effects and minimize potential side effects (that are listed in the PDR)
such as Gynocaemastia (breast enlargement in males), sexual side effects, and an increase in fat deposition. These compounds have been reliably shown to increase
testosterone and reduce excess estrogen, resulting in a youthful hormone profile that optimizes immune function and to some degree, body composition"

Targeting breast stem
cells with the cancer preventive compounds curcumin and piperine -
Breast Cancer Res Treat. 2009 Nov 7 - "Both curcumin
and piperine inhibited mammosphere formation, serial passaging, and percent
of ALDH+ cells by 50% at 5 muM and completely at 10 muM concentration in
normal and malignant breast cells. There was no effect on cellular
differentiation. Wnt signaling was inhibited by both curcumin and piperine
by 50% at 5 muM and completely at 10 muM. Curcumin and piperine separately,
and in combination, inhibit breast stem cell self-renewal but do not cause
toxicity to differentiated cells. These compounds could be potential cancer
preventive agents. Mammosphere formation assays may be a quantifiable
biomarker to assess cancer preventive agent efficacy and Wnt signaling
assessment can be a mechanistic biomarker for use in human clinical trials"

Influence of piperine on the pharmacokinetics of curcumin in animals and
human volunteers - Planta Med. 1998 May;64(4):353-6 -
"Concomitant administration of
piperine 20 mg produced much higher concentrations from 0.25 to 1 h post
drug (P < 0.01 at 0.25 and 0.5 h; P < 0.001 at 1 h), the increase in
bioavailability was 2000%. The study shows that in the dosages used,
piperine enhances the serum concentration, extent of absorption and
bioavailability of curcumin in both rats and humans with no adverse effects"
