  • Polyphenol-rich tart cherries ( Prunus Cerasus, cv Montmorency) improve sustained attention, feelings of alertness and mental fatigue and influence the plasma metabolome in middle-aged adults: a randomised, placebo-controlled trial - Br J Nutr 2022 Feb 3 - "Tart Montmorency cherries (MC) are a particularly rich source of anthocyanins and other polyphenols that have been shown to elicit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and vasomodulatory actions. This study aimed to determine the influence of chronic MC supplementation on cognitive function and mood. In a 3-month double-blinded, placebo-controlled parallel study, middle-aged adults (mean ± SD: 48 ± 6 years) were randomly assigned to either 30 ml twice daily of MC (n = 25) or the same amount of an isocaloric placebo ... After 3 months, the MC resulted in higher accuracy in digit vigilance (mean difference: 3.3, 95%CI: 0.2, 6.4%) with lower number of false alarms (mean difference: -1.2, 95%CI: -2.0, -0.4) compared to the placebo. There was also a treatment effect for higher alertness (mean difference: 5.9, 95%CI: 1.3, 10.5%) and lower mental fatigue ratings (mean difference -9.5, 95%CI: -16.5, -2.5%) with MC. Plasma metabolomics revealed an increase in a number of amino acids in response to MC intake, but not placebo. These data suggest an anti-fatiguing effect of MC supplementation as well as the ability to improve sustained attention during times of high cognitive demand, this might be related to changes in amino acid metabolism" - See tart cherry extract at Amazon.com.
  • Effects of Tart Cherry Powder on Serum Uric Acid in Hyperuricemia Rat Model - Evid Based Complement Alternat Med 2020 Jul 22 - "low dose of tart cherry powder (0.17 g/kg·bw) showed effects on hyperuricemia by slightly decreasing serum uric acid and improving kidney injury, whereas high dose of tart cherry powder (0.50 g/kg·bw) could merely alleviate kidney injury. Meanwhile, adenosine deaminase activity rather than xanthine oxidase activity was affected at low dose, which reveals low dose of tarty cherry powder may be beneficial to hyperuricemia through reduction of ADA activity, and its reported potentials on antioxidation or anti-inflammation provide clues for further study"
  • Effect of Tart Cherry Concentrate on Endurance Exercise Performance: A Meta-analysis - J Am Coll Nutr. 2020 Jan 27:1-8 - "Tart cherry concentrate has been shown to improve muscle function, and reduce muscle damage, oxidative stress/inflammation, and muscle soreness in athletes ... Interventions included tart cherry supplementation and placebo ingested before, and/or on the day of exercise. Ten studies were included (totaling 127 males and 20 females) ... Tart cherry concentrate in juice or powdered form, ingested for 7 days to 1.5 hours before exercise performance testing significantly improved endurance exercise performance (SMD: 0.36; 95% CI: 0.07 to 0.64; p = 0.01; I2 = 0%) upon pooling of the ten studies ... Tart cherry concentrate has a significant benefit for endurance exercise performance. Key teaching pointsTart cherry concentrate has a significant benefit for endurance exercise performance.Tart cherry concentrate may enhance endurance exercise performance via its low glycemic index, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative capacity, and blood flow enhancing effects" - [Nutra USA] - See tart cherry concentrate at Amazon.com.
  • Sweet Cherry Extract Targets the Hallmarks of Cancer in Prostate Cells: Diminished Viability, Increased Apoptosis and Suppressed Glycolytic Metabolism - Nutr Cancer. 2019 Sep 11:1-15 - "The Saco "late harvest" extract was highly-enriched in anthocyanins and selected for use in biological assays. Non-neoplastic (PNT1A) and neoplastic (LNCaP and PC3) human prostate cells were treated with 0-2,000 μg/ml of extract for 48-96 h. Cell viability was evaluated by the MTT assay. Apoptosis, oxidative stress, and glycolytic metabolism were assessed by Western blotting and enzymatic assays. Glucose consumption and lactate production were measured spectrophotometrically. Saco cherry extract diminished the viability of neoplastic and non-neoplastic cells, whereas enhancing apoptosis in LNCaP. Cherry extract-treatment also diminished oxidative damage and suppressed glycolytic metabolism in LNCaP cells. These findings widened the knowledge on the mechanisms by which cherry extract modulate cell physiology, demonstrating their broad action over the hallmarks of cancer" - See sweet cherry extract at Amazon.com (but it only shows tart).
  • Tart cherry shown to decrease joint pain, sore muscles in some breast cancer patients - Science Daily, 6/10/19 - "Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) are a standard treatment for hormone receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women. These agents can help prevent recurrence of the disease by inhibiting the action of aromatase, an enzyme responsible for conversion of androgens to estrogens. About half of patients who take AIs also suffer from joint and muscle pain known as aromatase inhibitor induced arthralgia, which, at times, can be debilitating and cause patients to not complete their treatments ... This randomized, double-blind trial compared the consumption of 1 ounce of tart cherry concentrate in 8 ounces of water daily for six weeks with a placebo group in women with stage 1, 2 or 3 non-metastatic breast cancer ... Patients who completed the trial recorded a 34.7% mean decrease in pain compared to 1.4% in the placebo group ... The flavonoids and anthocyanins in tart cherry have anti-inflammatory properties and may be playing a role in reducing the side effects of joint pain and muscles aches, although etiology of aromatase-induced arthralgias remain unclear at this time"
  • Pilot Study of the Tart Cherry Juice for the Treatment of Insomnia and Investigation of Mechanisms - Am J Ther. 2017 Mar 27 - "The 8 completers with insomnia increased sleep time by 84 minutes on polysomnography (P = 0.0182) and sleep efficiency increased on the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index ... Cherry juice increased sleep time and sleep efficiency. Cherry juice procyanidin B-2 inhibited IDO, increased tryptophan availability, reduced inflammation, and may be partially responsible for improvement in insomnia" - [Nutra USA] - See cherry juice extract at Amazon.com.
  • Montmorency Tart cherries (Prunus cerasus L.) modulate vascular function acutely, in the absence of improvement in cognitive performance - Br J Nutr. 2016 Dec;116(11):1935-194 - "Participants received either a 60 ml dose of Montmorency tart cherry concentrate (MC), which contained 68.0 (sd 0.26) mg cyanidin-3-glucoside/l, 160.75 (sd 0.55) mean gallic acid equivalent/l and 0.59 (sd 0.02) mean Trolox equivalent/l, respectively, or a placebo ... There were significant differences in concentrations of total Hb and oxygenated Hb during the task period 1 h after MC consumption (P≤0.05). Furthermore, MC consumption significantly lowered systolic blood pressure (P≤0.05) over a period of 3 h, with peak reductions of 6±2 mmHg at 1 h after MC consumption relative to the placebo" - [Nutra USA] - See cherry juice extract at Amazon.com.
